Show Me “Surprised!”

Show Me “Confused.”

Show Me “Frustrated.”

Do your children have the Social and Emotional (SEL) skills they need to succeed in school?

Numerous research reports show that Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) has a positive impact on students’ academic performance. The I Can Relate game and process teach:

  • Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) skills
  • Self-Regulation skills
  • Kind actions and empathy

“Children become what they practice. As children make guesses about how other children feel and what they need, they are practicing relationship skills that help them show empathy and kind actions.”

    ~ Dr. Beverly Lonsbury

Playing the I Can Relate game with young children:

The I Can Relate Game for 3-9 year-old children has the same 4-step process used with older children and adults. This “kid-friendly” version includes a game board that encourages children to play as they move around the board listening to age-appropriate stories and exploring the feelings, needs, and kind actions of other children. Stickers are used to show progress after each Story Card is completed.

There are many ways to play the I Can Relate Game:

  • Individual play that develops social and emotional skills within one child
  • Team play with 2-4 children that encourages cooperation, social growth, and teamwork
  • Light-hearted competitive play with 2-4 children that encourages fun and good sportsmanship
  • Use the Story Cards as your bedtime reading ritual for encouraging meaningful conversations
  • Be creative and come up with your own way to play the game to increase social and emotional skills!

Why you should be playing the I Can Relate Game with your children:

  • Self-Regulation is managing emotions–one of the key predictors of later academic and social success.
  • Practicing these skills helps children develop healthy self-regulation and emotional health.
  • Developing social skills in empathy helps children build friendships with other children.

Smiling 3 year old“Layla’s grandparents started playing the I Can Relate game with her 11 months ago. It is amazing to see how huge her vocabulary of feelings has become–and how clearly she can tell us what she needs. Yes, that’s Layla in the pictures showing a few of the many feelings she can ‘show me’ and describe! Layla is now not even 4 and she has scored at a level higher than a 5 1/2 year old child in her language ability assessments. I highly recommend the I Can Relate Game to parents and grandparents who want to give their children a head start in school and in life!”

Kristin — “Layla’s mother”

Here’s just a sample of Layla’s comments:

“I’m feeling confused and I need help!”

“I’m feeling lonely and I need you to stay here.”
